The wood elements of the surfboard are on the surface, you can touch and smell the teak.  Teak has a high wax content, giving it good traction for hands on the rails.  It won't rot, stays cool and looks great.  The walnut tail/nose blocks are also exterior of the composite lamination of cloth and epoxy.  You can't get a ding or fracture that would let water into the foam core.
